But how did they find out vitamin C, or Ascorbic Acid, would be good to use on one’s person? It all started on Ball State University’s campus early one Indiana spring. Two important people to Malibu C, Dr. Keith Ault and Dilip Vyas (who is still one of our chemists to this day!) were crossing campus and noticed walnuts on the ground that were still intact despite the snow and cold temps that they had endured all winter that year. Dr. Alt picked one up, broke it open and found that it was still green inside. That got them both thinking about what was in the walnuts that kept them from oxidizing, even after being exposed to oxidizers like snow, rain, and sun. They took some walnuts back to the lab and began testing them. What did they find? You guessed it, vitamin C! With some more testing and formulating, Malibu C Crystal Gel was born.
