When it comes to removing artificial color from hair, the process can be challenging, requiring a careful and strategic plan to yield results all while preserving the integrity of the hair. At Malibu C, we’ve designed a complete system to help you achieve your desired results using our renowned Total Oxidative Management approach.
The Essential First Steps: Color Disruptor and CPR
The journey to effective color removal almost always begins with Malibu C’s Color Disruptor and CPR (Color Pigment Remover). The Color Disruptor works by breaking up the dye molecules, loosening them from the hair. You then layer CPR on top of the Color Disruptor to release the artificial pigment. Once you’ve reached your maximum pigment removal with this dynamic duo and must tackle additional direct dyes, it is time to pick up DDL XL and De-Ox!
Why You Need Both DDL XL and De-Ox
DDL XL (Direct Dye Lifter Extra Lift) is Malibu C’s powerhouse for removing direct dyes and vivid colors that can be stubborn and resistant. It’s a game-changer for those tough scenarios where color is deeply embedded in the hair. DDL XL lives in the lightener family. It is formulated with persulfates, which can compromise the hair’s integrity. When mixed with an oxidizer, such as developer or water, the product can continue to oxidize or “process” after the client has left the salon. That means even after shampooing the product from the hair, the hair will continue to oxidize, “process”, because the oxidation was not been stopped. As professional stylists, it is our responsibility to maintain the hair’s integrity as much as possible. This is where De-Ox comes in as a critical component of the process.
De-Ox is specifically formulated to stop oxidation on contact. By neutralizing oxidizers, De-Ox supports a Total Oxidation Management approach by minimizing damage and completing the chemical service.
How to Use DDL XL and De-Ox Together
Follow these steps to ensure a successful vivid color removal process:
NOTE: Do a strand test prior to application. Do not apply if test shows signs of damage.
- Preparation: Ensure the hair is clean and free of any buildup. Apply DDL XL according to the directions, focusing on the areas where the color is most resistant. See below to learn when to mix DDL XL with water or 10-20 volume developer depending on what color pigment you’re removing.
- Sectioning: Section hair and apply freshly mixed DDL XL with a bowl and brush to each section.
- Processing: Allow to remain on hair for a maximum of 45 minutes. The longer the processing time, the greater the lift. Check hair every 5 minutes until desired results are achieved. Heat is not recommended.
- Shampoo: After processing is complete, rinse the DDL XL from the hair and shampoo thoroughly (Malibu C Un-Do-Goo Shampoo is recommended). Rinse.
- Apply De-Ox: Activate De-Ox by adding 1 packet to 8 ounces of water in an applicator bottle. Shake to dissolve crystals. Apply the product and evenly distribute to stop oxidation. Allow to remain on the hair for 60 seconds and rinse.
- Shampoo & Condition: Shampoo the crystals from the hair, then follow up with Malibu C Miracle Repair or Concentr8 Mixers.
*** If proceeding with a color service, apply conditioner after completion of the service.
The Importance of Stopping Oxidation
Stopping the oxidation process is not just a recommendation—it’s essential for maintaining the health and wellness of the hair post-color removal. Oxidation can weaken the hair structure, cause brittleness, breakage, and cause irreversible damage. By using De-Ox, you’re not only protecting the hair from further damage but also ensuring that the color removal process is complete and that your client leaves the salon with the best possible results.
If We Still Didn’t Make it Clear Enough–Don’t Skip the De-Ox!
For professional stylists, the combination of DDL XL and De-Ox is a must for effective and safe color removal. These two products work hand-in-hand to remove stubborn direct dyes while managing oxidation. Remember, always pair DDL XL with De-Ox—because your client’s hair deserves the best care possible.
