A color change doesn't always land the way you pictured it. Color takes darker than the swatch, a toner tips too warm, a vivid refuses to fade evenly. When it's time to undo color, the instinct is often to reach straight for bleach, but there's a gentler route. CPR Color Pigment Remover is an in-salon, professional, vitamin C–based hair color remover that releases unwanted pigment without ammonia or peroxide, so stylists correct color without compromising the hair underneath. Here's how it works, and when it's the right tool to reach for.

What CPR Color Pigment Remover Does

CPR Color Pigment Remover is a professional, vegan hair color remover powered by Malibu C's Antioxidant Vitamin Complex. It releases unwanted artificial pigment from both oxidative and non-oxidative dyes, removing up to three levels of artificial color without lifting natural pigment, and without bleach, ammonia, or peroxide. The result is hair that stays strong and vibrant, and a canvas that's ready for precise recoloring.

How Freshly-Activated Vitamin C Releases Pigment

CPR arrives as ready-to-mix crystals you activate on the spot with water, shaking them into a gel. That fresh activation is the whole point: vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is at peak potency the moment it's mixed, so it goes to work at full strength. As the gel processes with gentle heat, the vitamin C breaks down the artificial dye molecules locked in the hair, shrinking them into smaller fragments so other ingredients in CPR can bind to them like a magnet so they can then be shampooed away — rather than stripping or bleaching the strand. Because it targets artificial pigment specifically, your natural level stays exactly where it is. That mechanism is why a vitamin C hair color remover behaves so differently from a bleach-based stripper.

Why It Protects Hair Integrity

Traditional color removal usually leans on harsh chemistry. CPR takes the opposite approach, no bleach, no ammonia, no peroxide, and no sulfates. By releasing artificial pigment instead of lifting the hair's natural color, it preserves the integrity of the strand and leaves hair ready for a fresh application. It's a big reason stylists ask “does color remover damage hair?” in the first place and why a gentle, vitamin C-based formula is a reassuring answer compared with reaching for bleach.

When to Reach for CPR

When a client wants to go lighter, when you need to remove current pigment to go darker, you have faded vivid, or muddy toner, this is when you should reach for CPR. These are the most common scenarios. (For a deeper look at correction strategy, see 5 Scenarios for Color Corrections Using Malibu C to Prevent More Damage.)

Correcting a Home Color Mishap

Box color gone too dark, too warm, or patchy? This is where CPR is especially effective. As a professional hair color remover, it releases the excess artificial pigment so a stylist can reset the canvas without the breakage risk of jumping straight to bleach.

Removing Excess or Uneven Pigment

Sometimes color takes unevenly, grabbing darker on porous ends, looking patchy through the mid-lengths, or building up after repeated applications. Because CPR removes up to three levels of artificial color, it's a smart way to even things out, releasing the pigment that's left the result looking muddy or overloaded while leaving natural color untouched.

Prepping for a Color Do-Over

Before re-coloring, you want a clean, predictable base. CPR clears away unwanted artificial pigment, along with mineral buildup, so the new color formula grabs evenly and develops true to swatch. Think of it as the reset step that makes the redo behave.

How to Use CPR for Best Results

CPR is a professional service step. Here's the process stylists follow:

1. Activate Malibu C® CPR

a. Add 1 packet of CPR to 4 ounces of warm water

b. Mix product and allow crystals to dissolve

2. Shampoo hair with Malibu C Un-Do-Goo® Shampoo and rinse

a. Towel-dry hair

3. Apply Malibu C Color Disruptor at the shampoo bowl, focusing on the areas where you want to remove the artificial pigment (Optional, but recommended for optimal results)

a. Comb through hair to ensure even saturation. Do not rinse.

4. Layer CPR directly on top of Color Disruptor

a. Use maximum pressure of palm and fingertips to push the product into the hair to ensure complete saturation

b. After applying CPR, flat wrap hair around the client’s head and cover with a processing cap

5. Apply heat for 45 minutes

a. Use a constant, consistent heat source such as a traditional hooded dryer, infrared heat lamp, heat cap, or spa mist

6. After processing is complete, remove from heat

a. Do not allow to cool

7. Remove the processing cap and pull product from the hair using your fingers like a squeegee

a. Rinse the product from the hair using moderately hot water until the water runs clear

8. Shampoo 3 times using Un-Do-Goo Shampoo, massaging and lathering vigorously, moving your hands down the hair shaft while scrubbing the product from the hair and rinse

9. Determine if you achieved your desired amount of removal

a. You can expect to receive 1-3 levels of artificial pigment removal using Color Disruptor and CPR. If desired amount of removal is not achieved, repeat steps 3-8 up to 3 times

b. It may be necessary to remove more than 1-3 levels of pigment. In this scenario, your next step is to use Malibu C DDL XL following the Color Disruptor and CPR service

10. If desired amount of removal is achieved, condition with Malibu C Miracle Repair Hair Reconstructor or proceed with color service
